Has there ever been a good movie with a giant monster destroying the world?

Think Cthulhu (which I dont think has ever been done). Just a giant monster that's really tall walking around and destroying shit.

In the movie The Myst there was a really cool scene with what I'm looking for, but it was only one scene:

There's a bunch of shit fucking movies with huge monsters but they're just gay fuckin shit... like cloverfield etc. Not scary or creepy at all.

I had a nightmare last night where there was a giant fucking monster like Cthulhu overlooking the world. Not attacking yet, but about to. It was horrifying. Where's movies like that?

Myst has some great elements, the film is better if it ends on that final shot of the car which is more a 'Thing'-like ending IMHO.

The scene linked is perfect- humanity is fucked, there's no way out of this shit and you can't even comprehend the horror that's coming, great stuff.

I hear the English film Night of the Demon (57) has a sense of what you're looking for, it's one that comes up over and over but I haven't seen it yet. I remember Godzilla vs Smog Monster (Hedorah) being one of the more creepy entries. They're not monster movies but the Quatermass films are also eerie/atmospheric in a lovecrafty type way. Recently saw The Dunwich Horror (1970) - there's only the bit at the end when the 'entity' starts trashing the place, its talky, not great but for a Lovecraft diehard its worth watching.

Do you mind subtitles? Gojira is sincerely great - it's not too slow and has an excellent ending. Yes, it's a metaphor for Hiroshima, but it's still a good one.

The big problem is a lot of the massive monster movies are very routine, and if the monster doesn't look the part, it takes you out of it. There's a reason The Deadly Mantis ended up on MST3K. The Giant Behemoth and The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms are cheesy, but I enjoy them.

However, if you want a film about not attacking the world YET, and that impending dread, it's not a monster movie, but it is the kind of tone you're asking for: the original Day The Earth Stood Still. It's very cerebral science fiction, back when the genre was both booming and relatively new, but it's excellent and plays well even today.

I've heard great things about Minus One, but have not watched it yet.

Shin Godzilla was supposed to be good, though.
I preferred Minus One over Shin Godzilla, but both are worth watching if you’re a fan.
