I saw them when they first came back in 2009 or 10. I was 17 and they were pretty good. I distinctly remember Duvall doing a good job on rain when I die.
I had tix to see them on their last tour but bailed because I couldn't score any coke for the show and I was depressed. As I've grown older and gone through the ringer with drugs their music has only grown more relatable to me, and they're now one of my favorite bands ever. Layne was such an incredible vocalist and his substance abuse issues both made and broke him. I don't think he would've been as good without the junk. This is one of my favorite songs from them:
I love that fuckin roar thing he does after the solo fades out. It's not necessarily impressive but it just feels so real. Nobody expressed pain and anguish like him. Every live performance of the song included that little bit.
Until now with the new guy. This version sounds like fuckin dog shit. He doesn't even attempt to do the roar thing. Im glad Jerry is getting to play his big songs with a coherent and drama/drug free band. I imagine he was robbed of that experience for much of aics prime due to layne being such a junky.
Duvall is like Sam's club Lenny kravitz who is quite bland in his own right. You're Alice in chains. They could've gotten anyone they wanted. But then again there's no filling laynes shoes and it is a very intimidating prospect to try and do so. Duvall is just so aggravatingly mediocre and he seems to have gotten worse in the last 15 years.
Ive always loved their unplugged performance but I would like to see the unedited version because layne was allegedly so fucked up he needed like 80 takes to record every song. I know they kept one of his fuck ups included on sludge factory.
I'll hang up now.
