I don't think Morello actually cared about politics, at least not more than the superficial way any other celebrity does. Everyone else in the media is on the left, so he was too. The actual politics of the band came from Zach, who was raised by actual communists.
When the guys left Zach to form a new band with Chris Cornell, they barely made political music.
