Cumia is only friends with people lower than him like interns and ballwashers. He doesn’t want a two way street of friendship, he wants praise and someone he can use.
This is so sad, when you think about it in the context of what he had with Opie. All Gregg really wanted was an equal partner, and he was willing to sacrifice a lot of his time, money, effort and patience to have that with Anthony. But Anthony could never offer horizontal, mutual, supportive love like that. So Opie was throwing all his emotion down a black, fathomless well to rot.
