Stern was a phenomenon... He can get annoying, but who doesn't get annoying when you listen to them for hours on end? The spirit of being a petty diva was most effective when you are at the top. One of the best Stern moments was a prank caller lied to him saying Steven Spielberg was bashing him on MSNBC the night before. Howard went on for an hour bashing Spielberg and threatening him, his family, etc. It was so uncalled for and Spielberg's people immediately released a statement denying the claims and apologizing. He didn't even do anything, and he apologized to Howard.

Back in the very early 90s, I had a terrible job where I worked with a bunch of faggots who listened to WNEW ("where rock lives") in the morning instead of Stern. WNEW was a shitty old-school rock station featuring a slew of old 60s hippie DJs, who played a steady diet of tiresome old Who, Beatles, Springsteen and Doors songs on a steady loop. Howard had been feuding with WNEW, so one morning he rented a van with a huge loudspeaker, parked outside WNEW's building, and started goofing on them. WNEW was doing a retarded bit featuring a guy called "Marty the Rock And Roll Smarty", who'd answer idiotic rock trivia questions. During the bit, you could actually hear Stern in the background. The Marty guy flipped out and went on an anti-Stern rant, and the next day he was fired and never heard from again. And it was hilarious, especially hearing it from the WNEW side. They were terrified of Howard and didn't want any part of him.

Later in the 90s, WNEW dropped the classic rock format and went all talk, with Ron and Fez and, of course, O&A. And we all know how that turned out.
