Ray Liotta turned down the part before they offered it to Gandolfini which, in hindsight, was probably better for the show since Liotta would have tried to make Tony more sympathetic and likeable. The fact that Gandolfini was such a coke-fueled maniac probably helped him portray Tony's instability more convincingly which made him a more interesting character.
