Touched his own asshole while showering? I’ve heard this shit over the years that some guys are so closeted that the very act of scrubbing their own asshole is repulsive to them. Nana has also referenced over the years about not “touching that area” during a shower. I personally go knuckle deep during every shower. Anyway what do I know? $4 per pound.

I hate the fan theory that Phil was secretly gay. All the guys hated Vito for being gay and thought he should be killed. The only one that kind of didn't was Tony, because he was on his brief post-heart attack change of conscious. It's not about them being secret self-hating gays. It's because they all have uptight, traditional (sometimes hypocritical) views on what a man is supposed to be.

They point to the metaphor of Phil literally coming out of a closet when they ambush Vito in the motel room. Always hated that for being too on the nose. The last season was such shit.

One of the Sopranos books confirmed that Richie was gay in prison. But Phil has never been brought up as being gay by Chase or anyone else.

Tony wanted him alive over money. So that Vito would kick in double or triple if they would not whack him. They would always let guys live over money like Ralph and Carmine. Even Tony is basically kept alive by NY because of his construction connections.

That was hilarious. I always took that as Phil mocking Vito by coming out of the closet. Phil was oldschool in that he liked to go out on hits and do the killing himself. Him watching Vito being beaten with clubs and cringing is a reference to Casino. Where his character watched Pesci get beaten and even though he knows Pesci and his brother deserved it he can't help but feel nauseous that it is his friends being beaten. He also knows that unlike most of the guys he whacks he has to relive Vito's death in his mind over and over because Vito's wife and his own wife will bring Vito up again and again.

Imagine working with a guy and him marrying into your family for decades. Then finding out he is a homosexual (and implied to be a pedophile in the show as well). And now because of your honor code having to do the killing yourself.

The theory that he's full-on gay is stupid and contrary to what we see on the show. One of the only scenes where he's in a good mood is when he's about to fuck the Ukrainian housekeeper but the bomb in the wire room explodes as they're walking in. At most, Phil was bi and even then, only because of his lengthy prison stay. He was probably ashamed of discovering in prison that he could get off from getting blown by or fucking another guy. To him and everyone around him, being bi is basically the same as being gay which is where all the shame and overcompensation comes from.

The only one that kind of didn't was Tony

They couldn’t have Tony hate Vito for being gay because it would turn off the audience to the main character.

That was why they had to suddenly say he was the top earner, so they could have Tony be the “good guy” while also having some kind of plausible justification for him being - essentially - out of character.

They only did the Vito story because gay marriage was a big issue at the time. It was stupid because it was a retread of the Tony B conflict from the previous season, but with buggering and poofters.
