They hit at the right time - grunge was over and they needed something new to play which for some reason was college radio / frat party music (people forget how HUGE hootie and blowfish got and were for a time) so DMB was in a perfect spot, same with counting crows, blues traveler, sister hazel, etc and DMB been able to ride that ever since - now he’s considered dad rock and people still go see them play. I remember Dave Matthews said when they started when grunge was at its peak their shows would have more band members on stage than people in the crowd.
