As long as it conveys something apart from a product it's a common word I guess. It has similar connotations for most people - dystopian near future sci-fi, usually with some type of hypercapitalism and class divide theme.
I don't like the type of cyberpunk where everyone has huge robot arms and pink hair and shit, so I hated that game from the get-go. Why would average people want to cut off their limbs and walk around like freaks?
Neuromancer, Ghost in the Shell (movie and SaC), and the original Deus Ex have the right amount of tech to retain some realism.
