On the phone, to verify your identity they ask to send you a code. Then they give you the choice of either a text or voicemail. The following is the transcript from my call with a rep just now:

- Rep - before I forward you to my supervisor, I just need you to confirm your identity by giving me the code I will send you now, sir. Would you prefer text or voicemail?

- Me- (bewildered) ... What?

- Rep- Text or voicemail?

- Me- For the code you're going to send me?

- Rep- Yes, sir.

- Me- But... if you send it by voicemail... I would have to hang up to access the voicemail. Then call back and start over with a new rep. So how would you forward me to the supervisor?

- Rep- Yes, sir. That is why I gave you the option of text or voicemail.

-Me- ... Wha...Are you fucking with me?

-Rep- No, sir.

-Me- So this is like an intelligence test? I don't get it.

-Rep- Would you like me to send the code by text or voicemail?

-Me- TEXT. OBVIOUSLY. WHY WOULD I... Dude.

-Rep - Okay, I am sending the code. Please repeat it to me.

-Me- I don't see it.

-Rep- Okay sir, please give a moment.

-Me- ... Don't see it.

-Rep-Did you say voicemail, sir?

-Me- Did I say ... What do you ... Did you send a voicemail?

-Rep- Yes, sir.

- Me- I said TEXT MESSAGE. WHY WOULD I ASK FOR A VOICEMAIL?

-Rep- Okay, sir. My apologies.

-Me - Please. Just send me the text.

-Rep- I will have to send a new code, sir.

-Me- OKAY!

-Rep- Would you like me to send it by text or voicemail?

-Me- I... I don't think I can ... Click.

That's why I do my own version of "follow the sun" and make those calls between 9AM - 11AM. It's not a guarantee but I mostly get actual Americans answering the line. After 2PM forget it; it's all Indians.

I have twice been asked by street shitters to provide screenshots of an error in an AUDIO ONLY DTMF PHONE SYSTEM. These kind of arguments are needed or I will murder them.

As someone who used to answer phones for many years.. They have no idea what you're babbling about half the time. It's not like any company has a team of experts specializing in the DTMFer, just waiting for your IT tickets. Like they know.
