I boxed for years and started out just doing it casually to get back in shape after an injury. It’ll be heavy on cardio, you’ll do push ups and sit ups and squats and wall sits and stuff. Maybe jump rope depending on how many people are in the gym. Probably some stuff with a medicine ball. You’ll hit the bag, do mitt work either with a coach or fellow trainee. That’ll basically be it if you don’t want to spar. It’s a great workout and will get you in good shape.

Kickboxing is better than boxing for cardio. And working with a personal trainer is better than taking a large class especially with beginners who will drag the class down by not having their hands wrapped or not being able to keep up. Take a boxing class at your gym, then pound the speed bag a few times a week (if you do it every day your shoulders will be dead by day four), and jump rope.

Also don't get cheap wraps or gloves. You don't want to mess your hands up.

Boxing rules. You will probably have to spar with other people though. If you just want to get in shape, consider a women’s cardio kickboxing class.

Only pros or amateurs preparing for a fight should spar. Hitting mitts and pads is one thing. But actually sparring and getting hit is completely pointless unless you plan on fighting. No serious boxing gym will allow anyone to spar unless they are active fighter. And even then they try to match you against someone of equal skill.

What about BJJ vs other disciplines for general fitness? There's a place five minutes from me. I'm not looking to fight niggas or roll around and get my nuts squashed, but I could definitely use an ass-kicking and some healthy controlled violence to get me in better shape.

If you're looking for an intense workout regimen, check out some jiu-jitsu gyms. That shit is insane, but for your money you're not only getting in shape, but learning how to handle yourself on the ground.

I’ve trained at a couple different MMA/Boxing gyms and they always spar after class. Not full force without headgear obviously, but how else are you supposed to get any practical experience just doing pads?

As a kid ( like 7 or 8) I did judo for a bit and one lesson elsewhere where there was something involving weapons like num chucks. It almost feels like a dream but it legitimately did happen. I went with another kid as his parents took us. We never went back and my dreams of being the first UK MMA guy before MMA was even a thing ended then. We didn't and still don't really have a martial arts kids culture so fuck knows how i even got involved in it all.

Boxing/Muay Thai is way better for cardio but BJJ is better for strength and conditioning. The worst part about BJJ is getting other dudes sweat in your eyes/mouth and shit like ringworm.

Everyone I know that got into BJJ ended up with joint injuries. Maybe they were just tards, but make of it what you will.
