I knew nothing about it except from the 82’ movie. Holy shit, was that depressing. It’s kind of like the author’s take on All Quiet on the Western Front. Rambo is a teenage runaway that’s been drafted and horrendously abused by the Viet Cong. He returns a monster viciously murdering civilians in the woods even people that are kind to him after being roused by the authorities.
The Sheriff is actually portrayed sympathetically. His relationship with what is actually his foster father, the guy who sics dogs on Rambo is tragic because they’d recently had a falling out. Rambo murders him and Teasle feels tremendous guilt. It’s one of those one reads you don’t want to read again.
Rambo, who is never given a first name dies at the end. Trautman blows his head off. Sheriff Teasle rushes to the scene not to be bloodthirsty but to see the conclusion to what he sees as his adopted son. The ending relates that Rambo’s soul left his body to ascend to Heaven to be with the mother and father he never knew.
