I'd heard how bad it was for a long time and could tell it was pretty terrible just from the few clips I'd seen. I forced myself to watch the first episode recently out of curiosity and holy fucking shit, it is so much worse than I was expecting. Just the most bland, awfully written, schmaltzy shite I have ever seen in my life.

The ridiculously over the top sentimentality that's shoved down your throat the whole time is bad enough but the writing is fucking atrocious - none of the characters act like normal people would and the dialogue is garbage. Gervais' performance is so bad it's embarrassing too. It's like he's not even trying to act in it; he's just monologuing as himself. "Why should I try to be a good person when bad people get rewarded?" Nice I'm r/im14andthisisdeep insight, stupid. Not even lying when I say I had to mute it at certain points it was making me cringe so bad. Apparently the 1st season is supposed to be the "decent" one too.

Things like him just eating stuff like cold curry straight out of the can (one of the first "jokes") and constantly getting annoyed because there is no milk in the house etc. made me cringe so bad. It's like a 10 year old's idea of what depression is.
