You might’ve thought Norms special stunk and are too afraid to say anything here, but dont feel bad.

Im 12 minutes in and I feel like tapping out. But you cant really view this as just any old special. Its pretty interesting seeing a guy record goofy jokes knowing very well he might die the next day. The way I see it, its more of a tribute to Norm and a display of his character that he could do all of this without telling a soul. Norm is truly one of a kind and this special just lets you experience why that is, as he gives his fans one last taste of his material the only way he possibly could at the time. Nobody else would do something like this.

Then again Im only 12 mins in and maybe something else happens that makes me look like a fool, in which case DIIIIIIIP!

I lasted 15, I'm probably gonna come back to it before bed tonight but for whatever reason I found it hard to stay with. It kinda demands your attention more than it would with an audience there for whatever reason, like it's just a lecture. Definitely not going to say it stunk til i get through it but boy, it was tough going when i tried to watch it.

I just think about what every other comedian or really anyone would be doing if they were on deaths door. This day and age it would be a huge sob story and theyd make a big deal out of it. And here Norm is just secretly dying and recording a video for his audience.

I gotta admit, Im not sure Id be able to take that burden on quietly. I knew a guy that had cancer in his early 30s and it was not looking good for him. He tried for a while to keep it a secret but just couldnt. He needed support and I dont blame him. It takes pretty insane guts to do that, and thats why we love Norm

Normally, a roundtable discussion about “the craft” would be nauseating, but I think Norm deserved the tribute. When you die relatively young, the least you can expect is for people to give you a nice sendoff.

I didn't need a critique of it on some professional level. I'd like a discussion of Norm by people who knew him personally but I guess that will happen elsewhere and I'll be too lazy to go find it.

OK i watched it start to finish. It's great, really can't say it's not. The contrarian in me wants to pick holes in it and i worked out that the timing is always gonna be different without the audience. it moves way faster than I'm used to because people are always laughing in his specials so it doesn't jump about as quickly. I switched off at the roundtable but I'm glad I watched it. It's not like i'll see a better stand up routine for a while.

I listened to a lot of his 2018-2021 stand-up bootlegs after he past so heard most of the jokes already, yet still laughed a handful of times at the ones I already knew because he added to them (Scuttleheads slur for example). Of course the material does so much better with the audiences because the way he leads them around and uses their reactions, but yeah this one-take rehearsal really wasn't meant to be the special.
Youtube his 2019 standup and it'll be the same material with an audience to laugh with, the Netflix Nothing Special is to cherish like a final cheeky bit of content.

Does Kevan Brennan do opiates? His eyes trigger me whenever i see him. Hes always rockin pinpointed pupils. I dont think hes slamming dope but I think hes on pain meds or something. But i also remember someone saying he was a pretty straight edge dude. Its a tough one man. Genuinely. Hes gonna make me relapse doods.

You get it perfectly. Norm basically gave everyone a demo of a great album. I've heard all the bootlegs and they are tremendous

Apparently Norm’s doctors told him he would be fine and the cancer just metastasized very suddenly. They didn’t expect it and he died. I think he was just trying to tell goofy jokes and record it, and it got packaged into this

I believe he died from an infection-- the cancer had made him immunocompromised and he never really got out of the hospital after getting an infection after a procedure for his leukemia (or whatever).
